シビウ国際演劇祭2015 レポート - 細井洋介世界を旅しながら ~映画監督になるまでの軌跡~

今年もまたシビウの土地に立っていたー

「きっと来年また来るね！」初めて演劇祭に参加した昨年2014年、ルーマニアの仲間との別れ際に言った言葉。彼らに決して嘘をつこうと思った訳ではないが、まさか二年連続で参加することになるとは正直自分でもびっくりしている。また戻って来たいと思ったのは紛れもない事実だが、現実的に仕事のスケジュールを一ヶ月もあけるのは難しいし、二度目の参加ということでEUジャパンからの渡航の為の金銭的援助も受けないとなると、なかなか実現は厳しいのかなと思っていた。それを乗り越えてもまた来たいなと思ったのは、まずは単純にまた会いたいと思える仲間がシビウにできたから。そして演劇祭に関しては、複数回参加することで、全てが初めてのことであった一度目と違い、落ち着いてもう一つ大きい視点で演劇祭の良いところや改善点などを考えてみたいと思ったからである。
いざ一年ぶりにシビウに到着してみると、「わぁ中世の街並みだ！」というような昨年初めて感じたドキドキはなかった。それよりは、たくさん練り歩いてよく親しんだ土地にまた来た感じ。ただ、昨年配属された撮影チームのメンバーをはじめ、お馴染みの仲間に次々に再会すると嬉しさが込み上げ、それと同時に今年も怒涛の10日間がやってくるのかと思うと楽しみで身震いがした。
今年も撮影チームに配属されることとなった。昨年の主要メンバーが今年は何人か参加できなかったようで、二年目の私には信頼と共に昨年よりも大きな責任も与えられたような気がした。今年アシスタントについてくれた現地の高校生は、ありがたいことに昨年の私の映像を見てから直接学びたい志願してくれたので、色々技術的なことなど多少なりとも教えられるように心がけたつもりである。ビデオチームは新旧交えた11名で構成され、主な仕事は毎日フェスティバルのハイライト映像を仕上げて発表することだった。

昨年のボスとの関係からどんな映像を求められているのか把握できていたので、撮影に関してはより質を高くできた気がする。その分の余裕と二年目ということで、プロデュースする映像に関して今年は課題を見つけられた気がする。結論から言うと、毎日youtubeやFacebookにアップされる映像の再生回数が伸び悩んでいることだ。それは何故か。見てもらえなくては何の意味もない。端的に言うと、構成が単調で飽きるということだと思う。1日分ならスペクタクルで良いが、10日分となると毎日同じ音楽、そして演劇祭を褒めたゲストたちの似たようなコメント、同じ編集スタイルと、とてもオーディエンスに毎日連続で見てもらえるクオリティではないと言わざるを得ない。レポーターを使うのかコメディなのかPV的な感じにするのか、とにかく色を変えないと飽きてしまう。しかし編集を凝るに技術だけでなく時間が必要になってくる。会期中の時間は増やせないので、その分経験のあるスタッフの人数を増やすしかない。撮影方法も工夫の余地が考えられる。例えば、ドローンを使って空撮、またクレーンやドリー(トラック)を使ってより効果的な動きのあるカメラワークで惹きつけることもありだと思う。しかしこれにも予算と人数がかかってしまう。
また、もっとライブ中継をしてみるのも手かもしれない。最近ではスマホのアプリでも中継ができるものもあるので、ストリートパフォーマンスなどは、よりライブ感を出せると思う。音楽に関しても、毎年使っているテーマ音楽以外に色々使いたいが、著作権がある為さらにオリジナルの曲を製作してもらうのには予算が必要になってしまう。それであれば現場で流れてる音楽をうまく利用するというのも手かもしれない。とにかく単調な編集を変える必要がある。
とは言え、３分 x 10日分をの映像を毎日作るというのは、11人の映像スタッフがフル稼働しても相当ハードな内容で、これを改善するにはいくつか方法はあるが、どれも予算やスタッフの数と質を上げないと厳しい。それであれば、抜本的にアプローチを変えるというのはどうだろうか。例えば、その日のハイライト映像を翌日までにリリースするアーカイブ的なものでなく、「翌日の公演をまとめた映像」を作るのである。日々見切れない程の数の公演が行われている中で、終わった公演のハイライトをあまり見る余裕がないというのが現状ではないだろうか。それよりは、翌日何を見るか決める参考の為に見たくなるような、翌日の一押しやハイライトをまとめた映像を毎日リリースするのだ。それを作るのには、リハーサルを撮影するすしかないが、それができない公演の場合は過去の映像の借用、それもなければ写真を効果的に編集で織り込んでいくことで実現できると思う。こうすることで仮に映像の質を急激に上げられなかったとしても、確実な用途が見出せるので、自然と再生回数の増加も見込めると思う。
ところで、撮影していたあるゲストスピーカーが言っていた言葉が心に残っている。「経済を活性化させようと思ったら多くの地域ではその産業からの大気汚染や環境破壊を伴っているが、シビウでは芸術や文化を通して経済成長を遂げている。」2007年に文化首都に選出されて以来、その盛り上がりを決して一過性のもので終わらせず、成長をし続けているというのは立派だと思うし、学べることは多いと思う。シビウの街では子供達の多さにびっくりする。決して大きくないシビウにいながらにして、世界中の演劇や文化に触れる機会を持てる環境は素晴らしいなと思う。小さな子供たちには純粋にショーを楽しんでもらえるよう、そして高校生や大学生にはボランティア活動を通して、この地域に対する愛と責任を育んでもらえるようプログラムされているように思う。

Volunteering at Sibiu International Theater Festival 2015

So, I found myself standing on the land of Sibiu again this year in 2015.

I’ve participated in the volunteer program at Sibiu International Theater Festival last year in 2014. I’ve told Romanian colleagues that I would come back again, but to be honest, I did not think it was possible to come back to volunteer here two consecutive years because of my work. However, I managed my work schedule because I had friends who I wanted to meet again. Also, I thought I could think about what can be better about the festival by participating multiple times, while everything was for the first time and fascinating last year.

I was assigned to the video team as last year. Since some of the key members from last year were absent, I felt more responsibilities and trust from the bosses for the second year. Our main job was to make the 3 minutes highlight videos everyday.

I understood better what kind of shots my boss wanted from the experience last year, so it was easier for me to work this year. So I had more time to think about what can be improved in the video team for the festival. We actually had some issues that the view numbers of the videos on Facebook and Youtube were not increasing for some reason. Why is that? There is no point if people don’t watch it. I think the problem is that the structure of the video is the same every single day including the music and the comments of the guests, even though the shots are different each day. Its quality is actually great, but it could be boring if it is the same style everyday. Whether if it’s comedy, music video style, or news style with a reporter, we need to change the style to keep attracting the audience. Music should be changed sometimes. I know there is the copyright issue, and it is expensive to ask the musician to compose another original music, but we can utilize the live music or sound that we can hear on the spots at the festival. Also we can make some improvements with the technical side of the shooting. For instance, we can use drones to shoot some aerial shots. Dollies and cranes could add more interesting camera movements. Shooting beautiful 4K images could catch the audience’s eyes, too. Live streaming of the street performances could be another idea to make real time buzz.

However, knowing the possible solutions, making these ideas happens cost more money and more experienced crew. Making 3 minutes videos for 10 consecutive days demands a lot of work, and all 11 members of us have already been working very hard. So what can we realistically deal with the limitation of the budget and time? How about making the highlight video for “next day”, not video of the day. There are 40-50 shows a day, including exhibitions, conference, and workshops, so people are already busy and overwhelmed. And they have to decide which shows they are going to see next day and make the schedule. So it is understandable that they don't have much time to look back the “archival” videos from today. The video team can make the highlight video for next day, which can be the reference for the audience to decide which shows they are going to see. We need to shoot the rehearsal to make those videos. If it is not possible for some companies, we can use the archival footage or photos. It may not look as good as the videos from the actual performances, but I think the number of the views will increase because it meats the demands of the audience.

These are my suggestion, but I really think the video team this year worked very hard and produced great videos under all the limitation.
