＜シビウの街の唄より＞
ルーマニアはシビウ、一ヶ月の旅から帰国しました。普段仕事にしている海外旅番組の撮影では10日前後の滞在が多いが、今回は一ヶ月。するとその土地や一緒に過ごした人達への愛着で溢れ、離れる時には心に淋しさを感じていた。シビウの人達は本当に暖かく、素敵な街だった。
さて、最初に話を戻すと、私は映画やテレビ撮影を仕事にしているというバックグラウンドもあり、シビウ国際演劇祭ではビデオチームに配属された。ビデオチームは11名で構成され、主な仕事は毎日３分 x 10日のフェスティバルのハイライト映像を仕上げて発表することだった。

私以外は全員ルーマニア人で、ミーティングはほとんどルーマニア語で行われたが、仲間が英語で訳してくれたので、何をすべきかというのは明確になっていたように思う。具体的には、野村萬斎さん率いる世田谷パブリックシアターを始め、名取事務所、金沢舞踏館など、日本のカンパニーの撮影と、様々なインターナショナルの撮影を担当した。インドアからストリートパフォーマンスまで、一日に５つ程撮影する為、朝から夜まで忙しかったが、同時にたくさん観劇出来たのは嬉しかった。
少々個人的な話になるが、フィリピンでの過酷な撮影から帰国して中二日程でルーマニアに出発したので疲れ切っていたというのもあり、今回はフェスティバルの映像はしっかり撮るが、それ以外はゆっくりしようと思っていた。しかしシビウに着いてみると、その中世を思い起こさせる美しい街並と、素敵な人々、受け継がれる文化、そして美味しい食事を目の前にして、これはもっと多くの人に知ってもらいたいという気持ちが自然と湧いてきた。そう思い立ってからは、自分の空いた時間を使って少しずつシビウの街を撮り溜めてきた。シビウを舞台に、テレビ用の旅番組を完成させる予定なので、それは改めてお知らせしたいと思う。
そんな中、国立ラドゥスタンカ劇場のディレクターであるキリアック氏にインタビューをした時に興味深いことを言っていたのが印象に残っている。
「私は文化、芸術の力を信じている。例えば、今回ロシアの名門劇団であるマールイ劇場を招待したのには理由がある。残念ながら現在ルーマニアとロシアの『国家間』の関係はあまり良くない。しかし、『芸術家同士』としては話し合いを持てる。そういうところから平和に繋がると信じている。」
どっしりと構え、一語一語をはっきりと、そしてゆっくりと紡がれる言葉から迷いは微塵も感じられなかった。なるほど、シビウ演劇祭は上質な演劇はもちろん担うけれども、そういった側面も考えられているのかと、改めて重要性を感じた。戦後６０年経ち、昨今日本でも集団的自衛権や平和のあり方などが論じられている中で、芸術で平和を掲げるというのは些か理想的過ぎると取る人もいるかもしれないが、私もその可能性を信じてみたいと思えた。
又、この演劇祭を通して、シビウにポジティブな影響を与えているのは芸術面だけでなく、観光、政治、経済、教育など様々な分野に渡るということに気づく。いち学生演劇祭から、三大国際演劇祭にまで昇華させたという点をとっても、町おこしなどを考える時に見習うべきところが大いにあると感じた。一つ例を挙げるなら、学生のボランティアだろう。若い頃から街のイベントに能動的に参加することで、自分の街への愛が育ち、同時に責任も芽生える。そんな彼らが育って行くことで、いずれフェスティバルを、そして街をリードする存在になる。そしてまた次の若い世代が参加する。それによってサイクルが生まれ、決して一人のリーダーに頼った一過性のものではなく、持続可能なものになっていくのだと思う。何故この点を強調するかと言うと、実は私にも地元を盛り上げて行きたいという夢があるから。埼玉県の熊谷市という特筆すべき観光資源を持たない地域にとって、芸術というのは大いなる可能性を持っていると思う。演劇祭を通してシビウという街がここまで活気付き、再生して行く様を目の当たりに出来たことは、私に大きな勇気を与えてくれた。
演劇祭を通して、一ヶ月間どっぷりと演劇表現のことを考える時間を持てたのは自分にとってとても有意義な時間だった。最後になりますが、関わってくれたルーマニア、そして日本の方々、本当にありがとうございました。これも縁、また何らかの形で関わらせて頂けることを楽しみにしています。
I just got back to Japan safely from Sibiu, Romania. I was so sad to leave the beautiful Medieval city Sibiu, where I stayed for a month. As a travel program director for TV, I have chances to travel around the world, but I have to say that Sibiu is one of the best places where I have visited.
Regarding the volunteer work, I was assigned to the video team, where I could use my film and TV background. Our main job was to produce a 3 minutes highlight video each day during the festival.

The team was group of 11, and everyone was Romanian except me. But they kindly translated the meeting in English for me, so I was clear about what to do. My job was to film most of the Japanese performances, which included Setagaya Public Theatre, Natori Office, and Kanazawa Butoh Kan, and also other international performances. I ran across the city to cover about five performances a day from indoor to outdoor, so it was physically tough. But I was lucky to see many performances at the same time.
I arrived at Sibiu two weeks before the festival, and I honestly was planning just to relax because I was already exhausted from the previous shooting in Philippines. However, as soon as I discovered the beautifully preserved historical architecture, wonderful people, food, and culture, I began to feel like that I wanted to share it with more people. So I decided to make a TV show about the city of Sibiu and the theater festival taking advantage of my job. I will let you guys know when it is done.
While I was interviewing Mr.Chiriac, the director of the national theatre Radu Stanca, he told me the inspirational story. He confidently said, “I believe in the power of art. For instance, I invited the prestigious Russian company this year for a reason. Even though the relationship between Romania and Russia is not really good right now, we artists can still talk through art. And this could bring the world peace.” His words might sound too idealistic for some people, but I would like to believe in the possibility.
I realized that this theater festival has been giving the city of Sibiu the positive influences not only for the cultural aspect, but also for the tourism, politics, economy, and education. Also the volunteer program is working very well. It certainly helps young generation to have more love and responsibility to their own city. And they will lead the festival and the city when they grow up. That makes the great cycle, which makes the project sustainable. I was very inspired to see what theater could do to Sibiu because my ultimate dream is to develop my hometown. We don't have much resource for tourism there but I believe that art has the power.
Lastly, I would like to thank everyone who helped the festival and the volunteer program. I only wish that Romanian people have more chance to come to Japan as well. I would be more than happy to welcome you all. The international theater festival was just incredible. I absolutely had great time. You guys are amazing.
